RARE & FINE CONFEDERATE QUATERMASTER ISSUED ENLISTED KEPI.

02-17514

This cap is Confederate depot issue, appears like well documented Richmond clothing depot examples, but should have been issued from closer to gulf coast if ID is correct would date early 1862. Cap has loose ID as worn by C. Edward Seaman who enlisted June 19, 1861 in Pensacola, FL was transferred to Confederate navy April 16, 1862 & the naval cap in next lot was his also. Regardless of ID being correct or not, this is a very fine surviving Confederate cap in superior condition.

Confederate woven coarse wool jean cloth in dark gray/butternut seen on several western depot jackets & virtually identical cap pictured on page 156 of Echoes of glory, Arms & Equipment of the Confederacy (New York Military History Collection). 1.5” Thin painted canvas sweatband is complete, heavy cotton osnaburg commonly seen as lining material in western depot jackets is complete, painted cardboard visor w/ sewn canvas edge is complete. Chin strap made from tarred canvas is complete as are two flat brass side buttons.
