Bbl. 28 5/16″

Lyman 48B aperture rear sight. Interchangeable aperture front sight. These rifles were developed to compete in international competition for the “Free Rifle” as it was found that the service rifles lacked the features needed to be competitive in this field.

This Model of 1922 was developed by the cooperation between Springfield Armory and the Marine Corp Depot at Philadelphia, PA . In addition to the Lyman 48 rear sight these rifles were equipped with a purpose built aperture front sight which has a retaining screw at the top rear. The interchangeable insert which is a heavy post in this specimen is retained by 2 small screws accessible at the front of the sight. the sight is marked 15.

It has a heavy barrel measuring approximately 1.25 at the receiver ring and tapers to .865 at the muzzle. The barrel has been drilled for a scope block approximately 6 1/2″ ahead of the receiver ring and has a number “33” between the filler screws. The bright bolt which is marked at the top of handle has “W L K 3”.

The firing pin and striker assembly appears to be in the standard configuration. The safety lever is an interesting 2 tone finish. The magazine well has a heavy steel insert riveted to the left side which retains the curved single shot floor plate & projects downward from the bottom of the rifle to accommodate the mounting of a cork ball palm rest which is adjustable for forward and back plus for elevation.

The trigger is an adjustable double set type of the continental pattern manufactured at special order. The walnut half stock with a checkered pistol grip and checkered hard rubber grip cap has 2 recoil bolts. The buttplate is an unusual checkered red fiber material with a metal tang at the heel. The stock is fitted at the toe w/ a steel shoulder rest which may be set forward, rearward or removed entirely. The forend is fitted w/ a sliding rail holding the swivel. This rail is fastened to the barrel with a heavy target type split band.
