RARE CLASSIC EARLY AMERICAN GUARDLESS COFFIN-HANDLE BOWIE KNIFE

COFFIN-HANDLE BOWIE KNIFE. 13.75″ overall, 8.75″ spear point blade, 4.5″ sharpened top edge, .2″ thick, full tang. Ebony grip slabs sheathed with pinned silver strap at pommel, filed notches along full tang edges for grip with silver sheeting. Pinned silver bolsters at ricasso, ricasso wrapped on 3 sides with thin silver sheet. Grip slabs riveted with 7 silver pins and washers on each side. 3″ pinned silver escutcheons. Sheath has silver throat & tip. This knife of the earliest American form is highly sought and highly counterfeited. Accompanying this knife is James Batson’s 173 page 2019 text “JAMES BLACK & HIS COFFIN BOWIE KNIVES”. Batson shows examples of other classic 1830s-1840s knives of this genre, all copied from same original maker. CONDITION: knife appears original, very good overall, erosion and large chip to ebony slabs. Blade is gray/bright with sharpening & polishing, pin prick pitting in small areas. Sheath throat has restored silver soldered collar, leather is replaced. PROVENANCE: William “Bill” Turner (1942-2012), Bob Berryman, Texas collection.
