JOHN ULRICH ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION RIFLE WITH ACCOMPANYING MADIS LETTER

20″ carbine style has King’s Improvement marking. Mag band mounted front w/ carbine leaf rear sight. Full length mag. Third model brass action is factory engraved. Sides feature scroll w/ punch dot backgrounds surrounding a Mexican eagle on the left sideplate w/. a shield in the vignette on the right sideplate. Complementary scroll extends to upper & lower action areas & the brass buttplate’s peak. Lower tang bears the engravers signature “J.ULRICH”. Band fastened forend & straight grip walnut stock. Inside of lower tang & top tang stock channel has assembly # “24”. Inside toe of the brass trapdoor buttplate has assembly # “900”. In his letter George Madis recalls observing other special M1866’s with differing assembly numbers. UNATTACHED ACCESORIES: Handwritten 2 page letter from Geaorge Madis the author of “The Winchester Book”. George states that he has carefully examined this carbine and “have determined that is is a factory engraved original Winchester.” A Cody Firearms Records Office check states: “serial number application date not available / Type: Carbine / Received in warehouse on September 5, 1876 / Shipped from warehouse on December 16, 1876, Order number 7603”. The 3 piece cleaning rod is held in the stock compartment.
