H. NOCK MARKED DOUBLE FLINT SHOTGUN WITH SILVER MOUNTS
01-26108
Cal. 24 Bore
S# NSN
The famed Henry Nock died in 1803 and his business was taken over by Wilkinson. Nearly all of his shotguns are serial numbered and have London proofs. This gun is obviously a knock off with its 30″ twist barrels engraved “H. Nock London” on top rib. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs. Breech plugs with platinum bands at rear have gold lined touch holes. Locks with slightly chamfered plates and rebated tails are fitted with waterproof pans and bridled roller frizzens with rollers on feather springs with bulbous finials. Serpentine cocks are scroll engraved. Lockplates are engraved with starbursts around lock pins and bird scenes behind cocks. “H. Nock” is engraved under pans. Stock is made of dense birdseye & quilted maple with spectacular figure. Mounts are of silver and hallmarked for Birmingham, Sterling, date code “y” for 1822 and maker’s initials “F&J” (not found). Mounts are engraved with feather borders and elongated acanthus scroll, a coiled sea monster appears at top of buttplate and a foxes face is on trigger guard bow. Stock attaches to barrels with sidebolt through silver escutcheons and is checkered at grip. Ebony ramrod with brass tip and tail (worm under cap) mounts through two plain pipes and silver thimble with pineapple finial which matches trigger plate.
