UNIQUE BOYLE & GAMBLE “DIAMOND-SHAPE-HILT” SWORD OF CAPT. HENRY HATCHER, 2ND VIRGINIA CAVALRY
02-23362
This well-known sword from the Don Tharpe collection was sold by Heritage Auctions in 2007. It is the only sword to ever surface with its unique branched diamond hilt architecture. It is attributed to the Richmond firm of Boyle & Gamble Based mainly on the long ricasso unstopped fuller blade found exclusively on B&G swords made for Mitchell and Tyler. The grip is also identical to some B&G grips with single copper wire wrap, plain undecorated cavalry style pommel. The scabbard is unique in design with the long heavy pinned brass mounts with tapered ring mounts, and heavy octagonal “coffin-shaped” throat. This is a beautiful and unique Confederate sword.
UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of description & results from Heritage Auction. Lot 72230 June 24, 2007.
