SCARCE S&W 5-SCREW 4″ PRE-MODEL 29 CASED REVOLVER

25-1106
Cal. 44 Mag
S# S 167912A

Bbl. 4″ with Baughman front sight having factory red insert; fame mounted white outlined Micrometer rear. Mfg. 1957 (1956-1958) with 5 screw frame having serrated target trigger and checkered target hammer; both case colored. Scarce barrel length with noted references stating less than 25% of its 6,500 unit production was 4″ and that 4″ barrels were not offered until late 1956; 6 1/2″ was the common length. Matching serial numbers on barrel (in recess for ejector rod), cylinder and ejector. No definitive explanation for the “A” after its butt serial number (no “A” after the other numbers) but another in the 174000 range was internet found to have it as well. A different internet reference stated that “A” indicates 1968 production which is not correct, but it could be indicative of a 1968 factory rework. Most older reworks are marked with a 5 pointed star or have a 3 or 4 digit date code on the lower front left of the grip frame. Goncalo Alves target grips with “coke bottle shape” having extractor cut and diamond center around its grip screw.

UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: very good, blue / black presentation case with second series (post late 1956) style clasp latch. Blue / violet satin interior with revolver outline containing proper brass based wool mop and later production sight screwdriver having aluminum fluted handle rather than being blued steel with knurled handle. Missing its aluminum cleaning rod.

PROVENANCE: From the Estate of Jon Thomas, Gunsport, LTD.
