These rifles gained a fine reputation in Africa and India for most plains game and became quite popular. Examples are usually found in well worn condition and with shot out bores. This rifle remains in remarkably fine condition and is possibly the best extant. It has 26″ tapered round barrel fitted with island rear base holding one standing four folding leaf express rear sights. Sling eye and tall front ramp holding steel bead are soldered on. Rear portion of barrel is engraved “FOR GIBBS'” “256 MAGNUM” “CARTRIDGE ONLY”. Left side is stamped with London nitro proofs; right, with Steyr number “B5420” and Gibbs number “2565A”. Steyr action is marked “MODELL” “1903” on receiver ring. Sidewall is marked “STEYR 1906”. Bolt has normal butter knife handle and also bears both S#s. Trigger is of single pull. Solid milled trigger guard has been nicely thinned and shaped. Rifle takes down with removal of screw mounted forend and unscrewing barrel. Steel trap capped pistol grip stock of dark, well veined and lightly figured European walnut measures 14-1/2″ over fully checkered steel buttplate. Well cut slightly flat topped point pattern checkering is at grip and around forend. A sling eye and vacant silver oval are on toeline. Metal plates separate butt and action portion of stock from removable forend.
