NEW YORK ENGRAVED COLT FIRST GENERATION SAA REVOLVER

Bbl. 7 1/2″ with Hartford address and blade sight. 6-shot fluted cyl. Bullseye ejector rod head. Black powder frame. Full nickel finish. Frame, bbl., grip straps, and cyl. have 50% coverage of vine type foliate scroll hand engraving with punch dot backgrounds. It was common practice for many Colt distributors to order guns without embellishment and then send them to the New York engraving shops that did the work for the factory. Engraving on this gun is of New York style and was likely done at the shop of L. D. Nimschke. Custom 2-piece pearl steer head grips. Frame, bbl., cyl., and grip straps have matching numbers. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Colt factory letter stating “Serial Number: 40011/ Caliber: .45/c/ Barrel Length: Not Listed/ Finish: Nickel/ Type of Stocks: Not Listed/ Shipped To: B. Kittredge and Company/ Address: Cincinnati, Ohio/ Date of Shipment: August 7, 1879/ Number of Same Type/ Guns in Shipment: 50/ Remarks: As noted above, the records do not provide information with regard to the barrel length of the subject revolver or the type of stocks. However, this is usually an indication of a 7 1/2″ barrel length and walnut stocks as these were considered standard issue for that time period”.
