25-3518
Cal. 30 Pedersen
S# 39201

Extremely rare WWI Pedersen Device with an accompanying Model 1903 MK1 Springfield Rifle. The Pedersen Device was developed to increase the short range firepower available from the standard Model 1903 rifle. The nature of trench warfare may require a high degree of firepower at short ranges and the Pedersen Device was developed to meet that need. The Pedersen Device was carried by the soldier in a container on his belt. This allowed him to quickly switch a standard service rifle between long-range bolt-action fire and shorter range semi-automatic fire. The device utilizes a 40 round detachable magazine. The device which functions on the blowback principle, utilizes a 30 caliber rimless pistol type cartridge. The devices and their specially modified Mark 1 rifles started production in 1918. The war ended before they could be fielded with approximately 65,000 produced and approximately 101,000 rifles produced to accommodate them.

The rifles were used as service rifles and at times of overhaul or rebuild, the Pedersen Device related parts consisting of the special Sear, magazine cutoff and spindle were replaced with standard parts. The devices themselves were placed in storage until declared surplus in the early 1930s, and destroyed with only a small number being saved and it is thought that fewer than 100 now survive. This Pedersen Device is marked on top of the reciprocating slide “U.S.A. 1918-MARK 1 39201 REMINGTON-BRIDGEPORT / PEDERSEN’S PAT’S PENDING”. This device with its accompanying 40 shot magazine, has some of its small parts replaced, but appears serviceable and complete. Accompanying the device is a box of 40 original cartridges. The plain brown box is labeled “40-CAL 30 AUTO. PISTOL-BALL CARTRIDGES MODEL 1918 THE REMINGTON ARMS / UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY, INC. / BRIDGEPORT, CONN”. 39 cartridges remain in the box. Included also is an original khaki canvas belt carrier which has a capacity of five magazines. Carrier is marked on front “R.I.A. 7-19”. There are two reproduction Pedersen combination tools.

UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: there are a number of empty Pedersen brass cases formed from U.S. M1 Carbine brass. There is a Lee 30 Pedersen two cavity bullet mold and reloading dies, two shell holders, bullet sizing dies, cartridge case reamers and dummy cartridges. Group includes a blue plastic padded carrying case.
