PAIR OF CIRCA 1715 MILITARY TYPE PISTOLS MADE BY HENRY DELANEY FOR THOMAS GAGE OF SHIRBURN CASTLE IN ANTICIPATION OF THE FIRST JACOBITE REBELLION
01-27875 | Cal. 60. | S# NSN.
These pistols were among a group of twenty ordered in anticipation of the 1715 Jacobite rebellion and were displayed at Shirburn Castle Oxfordshire until the dispersal of the collection in 2003. In addition to the twenty pistols, twenty carbines also by Delaney were displayed. These pistols have 10″ stepped round barrels with turnings at breech ends and are stamped with London proofs and Delaney maker’s marks. Locks with rounded arched plates have broad serpentine cocks, beaded inset pans, unbridled friction frizzens and feather springs with dog nose finials. “H” “Delaney” (known to have been working in 1715 at Long Acre Holborn, London) is engraved in front of cocks. Stocks of dense European walnut extend to muzzles and are pinned to barrels. They are finished with insipient drop points and slight beaver tails at rear of barrel tangs. Brass mounts include fairly simple grip caps, trigger guards with rounded finials, flat “S” shaped sideplates and distinctive vase shaped crest plates engraved with standing rams over the initials “TG”. These plates are found on all of the weapons made for Thomas Gage and displayed in Shirburn Castle. Hickory ramrods with flat brass tips mount through early type multi-beaded pipes and no thimbles. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Morphy’s Auction catalog dated December 10, 2024 where a Delaney carbine and pistol from the same collection were sold.
