ATTRACTIVE BONE INLAID GERMANIC STYLE MATCHLOCK FOWLER

The 45″ sharply tapered octagon barrel has flared muzzle and square flash pan at breech end with pivoting cover. Deep notch rear sight is forged and filed integral with fence. Match lock with flat plate has split dog (match holder) engraved with grotesque dog’s face. Firing lever is nicely turned. Fruitwood stock of early style with deep sweep to toeline and high fluted comb extends to muzzle with bone cap and is pinned to barrel. Stock is extensively, almost completely, covered with inlaid bone and mother-of-pearl decoration consisting of a flow of scroll with floral and acanthus accents; leaves of which are stained green. This decoration surrounds inlaid female figures on either side of comb; one petting (?) a goose on right, another with a lyre on left. Sides are inlaid with scrolling sea monsters and some human faces. There are also human faces on bottom, with a full figure of a man at carry point. Bone barrel pin escutcheons are ovate and decorated in floral motifs. Walnut ramrod with decorated bone tip mounts through single bone thimble near muzzle end and hole toward rear.
