WILLIAM HAWKEN HEAVY FULL STOCK FLINTLOCK RIFLE

Bbl. 40″ octagon measuring 1 1/8″ across flats at the muzzle. Dovetail mounted German silver blade front sight with fixed V-notch rear sight in a second added dovetail 12 1/4″ forward of the breech. A second open dovetail is found 7 1/2″ from the breech. Top flat is marked “W. Hawken”. William Hawken, 1798-1885, of Williamsport, MD. was the 5th son of Christian Hawken. He built more traditional long rifles that contrasted with the half stock St. Louis rifles built by his famous brothers Jacob and Samuel. The lightly engraved trade lock is marked “LONDON / WARRANTED.” Double set triggers. Full length curly maple stock is held by 4 brass wedges. Brass fittings include a nose cap, sideplate, crescent buttplate, toe plate & finger curl trigger guard. Pierced & segmented rectangular lid patch box is lightly engraved. German silver ornamentation consist of a diamond wrist plate with an American Eagle & shield engraved on the oval cheekpiece inlay. The cheek piece & toe line have moulded lower edges with highlights of relief carving found between the cheekpiece & buttplate. Artificially striped hardwood ramrod held by a brass thimble and 2 octagon pipes. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: previous auction listing stating that this rifle was formerly of the Bill Reisner (former president of the KRA) Collection. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Norm Greenberg Collection. STATUS: ANTIQUE.
