SHOWY SCOTTISH REVIVAL ALL METAL FLINTLOCK PISTOLS BY PLAYFAIR
01-26943 | Cal. 58 (Both). | S# NSN (Both).
This high quality and fine condition pair of pistols were made by Playfair & Company of Aberdeen, Scotland between 1876-1955. They specialized in this type of weapon used as part of complete Highland dress as popularized by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. These pistols have 8″ barrels of usual Scottish style. Raised breech portions are fluted and then transition to round with filed in spiral flutes and again transition to octagonal with flared muzzles. Tops of barrels are engraved with thistles. Traditional early type flint locks with Miquelet internal sears are fitted with serpentine cocks with Doune style stars at heads, inset faceted pans, unbridled friction frizzens and feather springs with foliate finials. Locks are engraved with feather borders around some scroll. “Playfair” is under pans. All metal stocks with rams horn butts appear to be made of Tombac a gold hued alloy of copper with a high tin content which resists tarnishing. Stocks are very nicely engraved with flowing scroll and some feather and geometric designs on bottom. Traditional Scottish knot work is on tops of grips. Stocks are fitted with usual ball triggers and matching prickers at centers of butts. Well filed steel belt hooks are on left sides. Traditional fancy turned steel ramrods mount though long pipes as thimbles. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: invoice from Greg Martin Auction via Proxibid for these pistols at a cost of over $17,500. STATUS: ANTIQUE.
