FINE MODEL 1833 DRAGOON SABER ATTACHED TO ITS RARE REGULATION SABER BELT & BUCKLE
02-26424-5
Rarely offered are the original 2″ wide buff leather saber belts with 50 x 71mm “plates made of brass, with strong wire hooks”. These were issued to the new regiment of dragoons raised in 1833. Robert Dingee originally made these belts in 1832 contract and Alleghany Arsenal filled an order in 1835. The Ordnance Board agreed to replace this plain brass buckle with the oval US buckle within 4 years to the pattern 1839 US oval belt plate used into the Civil War. Some dragoon rigs such as this remained in armories, especially in the South based on the amount of this plate & belt hardware found in early war Confederate camps and battle sites. It would very difficult to find a better example of this rig, very few survivors. PROVENANCE: Marcus Porpora lifelong sword collection. STATUS: NON-GUN.
