SCARCE U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1870 TRAPDOOR SADDLERING CARBINE.

Barrel “in the white” is unmarked. Folding ladder rear sight graduated 2,800. Rear sight ladder over receiver ring. Steel front sight base with brass blade. Breech block is marked “1870 / eagle head / U.S.”. Bevelled lockplate with two-click tumbler. Lockplate is marked “1865” at tail and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” below thumb latch and “spread wing eagle” ahead of hammer. Hammer spur has checkered enclosed in shield. Walnut stock with single barrel band retained by string. Buttplate marked “U.S.” on tang. No markings are visible.
