STOCKED MARTIALLY MARKED COLT 3RD MODEL DRAGOON PERCUSSION REVOLVER
01-29237 | Cal. 44. | S# 17761. | Mfg 1858.
The third model Dragoons were mfg from 1851-1861 with a total manufactured of 10,500. Out of those approx 1200-1500 third model revolvers were cut for stocks. This example is accompanied with a 3rd variation stock that attaches to the revolver via yoke extensions that fit into the recoil shield and secured with a hook that clamps to the butt. The 7.5″ bbl has the correct half moon German silver front sight, dovetailed rear sight which was factory mounted through the 1-line “ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY” bbl address, and “S” inspector stamp found on the bbl lug. The cylinder is marked with the SN and 2 proofs; “M” & “S”. The cylinder roll scene is indiscernible and 3 of the cylinder pins remain partially intact. The four screw frame is marked with the “COLTS/PATENT/U.S.” stamp on the left side of the frame. The trigger guard strap is inspector marked on the left should with an “M” and the trigger guard web is stamped with a sub inspector mark “E”. The iron backstrap is sub inspector marked “C” and notched for shoulder stock. The stocks are original Colt 1-piece with only a “7” partially visible handwritten in the backstrap channel and a faint ring from the inspector cartouche on the left side. These are well fit and likely the original set shipped with the gun. One of the upper backstrap screws is a replacement. The bbl, loading lever, cylinder, arbor, & straps are all matching numbers. The wedge is unmarked. The accompanying stock has the serial numbers “17763/17764” found on both the attachment lug and buttplate. SN “17763” is penciled under the buttplate. There is a mostly visible inspector cartouche located on the left and right side of the stocks wrist. STATUS: ANTIQUE
