FINE HENRY LEDFORD NORTH CAROLINA FLINTLOCK RIFLE

56.5” overall, 42” octagonal barrel, with fixed rear sight and inset dovetailed brass & German silver front blade. Rifle is pictured and described on page 134 of James Whisker’s Gunsmiths and Allied Tradesmen of North Carolina. Ledford (1796-1856) made many of the finest Davidson County, NC rifles. Characteristic of his rifles, 4-piece pierced engraved patchbox with distinctive eagle finial, 17 engraved German silver insets. A feature found on most Davidson County rifles is incised carved line running along top of comb on either terminating in a beavertail at the wrist. PROVENANCE: William W. Ivey collection.
