FINE CONFEDERATE COOK & BROTHER CARBINE

Cook & Brothers Manufactured over 7000 long arms during the Civil War. However, the survival rate is so low that a large quantity must have been destroyed near the end of the war. This is a typical late war carbine, almost identical to the example illustrated and described on pages 60-63 in Murphy and Madaus “Confederate Carbines & Musketoons” 2002, about 37” overall, 21” barrel stamped “COOK & BROTHER / ATHENS GA 1864” and numbered 6295. Lock is marked with Confederate First National flag rear of hammer, and “COOK & BROTHER ATHENS GA / 1864” and numbered 7522. Typical of late production is lack of captured ramrod and sling bar, mixed numbers, and use of Enfield hammer.
