RARE 1830s HENRY HUBER PHILADELPHIA BOWIE KNIFE
02-27258
This knife is pictured on page 224, “Accoutrements IV” by James Johnston. 14.5” overall, 10” meaty .35” thick clip point blade stamped “H. HUBER / C. STEEL” on ricasso. You can see characteristics of the very popular “ENGLISH & HUBER” bowies for blade form and sheaths. This early 1830s bowie has crown stag grip that covers half of the sculpted German silver cross guard. Tom Stapleton wrote about his theory that Huber made the first knife for Jim Bowie when his brother Rezin visited “a Philadelphia cutler” in 1832 and not Schively as is generally thought. Regardless, Henry Huber bowies are rare with only a few examples known, all with crown stag handles. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of 2 ASAC articles by Tom K. Stapleton, M.D. discussing Henry Huber as possibly the cutler who made Jim Bowie’s knife; copy of page from Accoutrements IV where knife is featured. PROVENANCE: James R. Johnston collection. STATUS: NON-GUN.
