RARE DOCUMENTED SAMUEL HAWKEN PLAINS RIFLE WITH NEW MEXICO HISTORY

This rifle descended in family of New Mexico pioneer Thomas D. “Tom” Burns (1844-1916) who was post trader & translator at Fort Lowell from 1864-1869. In 1869 the US Army abandoned Ft. Lowell and Tom Burns stayed establishing his home and developed trading company in Tierra Amarilla that made him one of the wealthiest men in the territory. His grandson Tom Burns III sold rifle in 1955 and history of several prominent collectors found in lineage.
Classic Hawken Plains Rifle is in standard configuration sold to buffalo hunters and plainsmen who wanted the best rugged no frills large bore gun to get the job done, iron mounted without patchbox, 46.5” overall, 30” octagonal barrel stamped on top flat: “S. HAWKEN St. LOUIS”, inset blade front sight and fixed notch rear sight, double set triggers, half stock attached with 2 keys. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: large file of history of Tom Burns & his New Mexico life, letters of authenticity, bills of sale, appraisals dating back to 1965.
