SCARCE SHARPS MODEL 1855 U.S. NAVY CARBINE

Bbl. 19” is unmarked with the British leaf style rear sight. The action is fitted with a Maynard Tape Priming Mechanism. The priming device cover is marked “Edward Maynard / Patentee 1845”. Left side has the standard sling ring and bar. Case colored receiver and lock with blued barrel. The action is serial numbered on the top tang behind “SHARPS / PATENT / 1848” marking. No additional action, barrel or inspection marking are found. Walnut stocks are fitted with brass patch box, butt plate and forearm band. The 3-screw patch box finial is numbered “11857”. The Model 1855 was mfg. at the Robbins & Lawrence factory in Windsor Vermont. Nearly all of the 6,796 Model 1855 carbines were purchased by the British or U.S. Governments. The British contract of 6,000 carbines was completed in 1856. Nearly a year later in March of 1857 Sharps offered the U. S. Government left over carbines from the British contract. On April 28, 1857 the Ordnance Department requested Sharps to send 200 carbines to the New York Arsenal. The total of U.S. contracts consisted of 600 for the Army and only 201 for the Navy.
