USGI M2 FLAME THROWER AS USED BY MUSEUM OF PACIFIC WAR IN LIVE FIRE DEMONSTRATIONS, WITH SERVICE KIT

02-25386 | S#. NC2861.

The portable flame thrower fielded by soldiers in World II (the flame thrower was extremely effective against the Japanese in the Pacific War) and Vietnam is one of the most fabled devices ever utilized in combat. Its simple mechanics have always been completely overshadowed by its capability for sheer destruction. Anytime one is fielded at a military demonstration the lines of spectators are long and deep. Adding to its mystique of fable & lore is the powerful heat wave that can be felt by bystanders far behind and out of range of the operator, and always remains a vocal highlight of any personal demonstration. Capable of use with liquid fuel, or thickened fuel, they never fail to completely engulf their target in a massive stream of flame. This particular piece appears quite complete, w/ several accessories. It was once photographed during live fire demonstrations at the Museum of the Pacific War w/ some photos included. It still wears the blue & brass ID tag marked w/ the following; “CHEMICAL CORPS U.S.A. / PORTABLE FLAME THROWER GUN M2A1 / 3/55. / SERIAL NO.NO2861/ LOT MC5017”. The wooden storage / transport crates and tanks have been repainted and re-stenciled. The 1960’s era service kit in its own original crate includes another original hose which appears to be in as new, condition. Complete with moderator, valves, and wrench for recharging tank, spare fittings and adjustable pipe wrench, orig spanners as well as spare O-rings and cork seals are included in this lot. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: wooden storage / transport crates, both for flame thrower & service kit. 2012 dated Service Report certifying hydro test & test firing, w/ photography. 2 flame thrower service kit technical manuals, (SC 1040-94-CL-E02 & TM 1040-221-12). Book “The illustrated Manual of U.S. Portable Flame Throwers” by Charles S. Hobson w/ CD of technical manuals. PROVENANCE: Military Museum Collection of Shooters Outpost, Hooksett NH. STATUS: NON-GUN.
