SUPERB NATIVE AMERICAN BEADED SADDLE OF ARAPAHO ORIGIN
02-26608
This truly extraordinary Native American saddle, probably of Arapaho origin, is completely covered with beaded decoration and features a mustang executed in gray and black beads on either side of the primarily white seat . Geometric designs throughout are rendered in red, light blue, and black beads along with the occasional black and gray beads as used to depict the two horses. The tops of the white painted iron stirrups are fully beaded as are the stirrup straps. The white leather under the beadwork appears to be fine doeskin or perhaps goat skin. It is quite possible that this artistically impressive saddle could have been created as a wedding saddle for a chief’s or tribal elder’s daughter, as it was made for the St. Michaels Mission Church Sale around 1919. The saddle was submitted to the Oklahoma State Fair and Exposition in 1922 and won a Blue Ribbon that is now attached to the saddle.
