TACKED & RAWHIDE WRAPPED CUSTER ERA 1873 SPRINGFIELD CARBINE

Standard carbine with 22″ barrel, square base front sight, 1200 yard adjustable ladder rear sight. Breech marked “MODEL / 1873” with an eagle head over crossed arrows & “US”. Lock plate marked “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1873” & the spread wing eagle. “Ainsworth” inspection cartouche opposite lock is covered in old rawhide attached with well patinaed small square nails or tacks, “P” proof in circle is visible on bottom of stock rear of triggerguard. This carbine has as good a look as you will find for Indian tacked and rawhide wrapped gun in range of several known Custer survivors. S# 20816 was re-captured at Tongue River in 1879 along with several 21000 S# guns, all known to have come from Custer battlefield. Stock has a dotted crooked snake drawing on left side of stock.
