COLT ARMY REVOLVER & HOLSTER INSCRIBED TO JOHN S. CHOWNING, 9th VIRGINIA CAVALRY
| Cal. 44. | S# 68419. | 01-30222/JS |
This well-worn “as found” revolver has nicely inked scrimshawed inscription on the left grip “JS Chowning / Midlothian, VA / Jun. 9. 63”, opposite grip scrimshawed the same “CO D 9th CAV”. The holster also is inscribed in same style “J S CHOWNING / D”. The June 9, 1863, date marks the battle of Brandy Station where 500 Confederate losses were dwarfed by nearly double Union casualties. This revolver had been issued to U.S. Cavalry just a year earlier. Colt Army revolvers were prized by Confederates who could capture them. John Sharpe Chowning (1843-1920) enlisted in Company D, 9th Virginia Cavalry December 23, 1861. He served the entire war and was later Sheriff and Virginia Legislator post war. The 9th Virginia was part of Jeb Stewart’s Cavalry. Like so many Confederate revolvers, a lanyard ring was attached to the butt so it wouldn’t be lost in action. Impeccably inscribed Confederate revolvers are exceptionally rare. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: large file of research and old appraisal document from Stone Mountain Relics. It is interesting to note that when Stone Mountain Relics they did not see the name on the holster, which consignor was proud to say he noticed and has had the revolver for over 25 years.
