CONFEDERATE BRASS FRAME BREECH LOADING MORSE CARBINE

Standard third model configuration, unique brass frame & furniture, 20” round barrel, fixed rear & brass bladed iron pedestal front sight, brass tipped iron ramrod retained with brass pipe and unique iron flange at muzzle. Rod has threaded end to attach to unique cleaning jag fitted in butt (missing but restorations are available) These rare Confederate breech loading carbines utilized Morse patent 50 caliber self-contained reusable brass percussion cartridges. The Third Model (or Type III) Morse carbine, produced at the State Military Works in Greenville, South Carolina, is distinguished by a more sophisticated locking and firing mechanism than earlier models. The most improved mechanism is the presence of a flanged iron rod connected to an iron plate with knurled edges which covers the forward top portion of the brass operating lever and iron catch on frame. The serial number range on type III carbines range from about 400 to end of production about 1,000. This is a well patinaed all matching gun which would make a nice addition to any collection.
