CONFEDERATE GEORGIA ARMORY RIFLE

Outside institutional collections, this makes only the 3rd example of this very rare rifle available to collectors, and this example is being de-accessed from the extensive Atlanta Historical Society collection as they have another example. Of the several hundred known manufactured, many are thought to have been captured and destroyed by Sherman during his “March to the Sea”. The handful of survivors are either early or late S#s, survivors documented are 22, 30, 32, 224, 296, and 309. Standard configuration follows US model 1855, 33” barrel with saber bayonet lug, brass hardware, small hinged toolbox, unique flanged lock screw escutcheons which are similar to Enfield, 1855 style adjustable rear sight, distinctive iron blade on half round pedestal front sight, Enfield style flat lock plate marked vertically at tail “GA ARMORY / 1862”. Serial number “30” stamped on top of buttplate tang and bottom of barrel. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: small file of correspondence, AHS appraisal & accession notes on this rifle. PROVENANCE: George Wray collection; pictured and described on pages 254-257 of “CONFEDERATE RIFLES & MUSKETOONS” by Murphy & Madaus 1996; Atlanta Historical Society 2005 when they purchased the Wray collection; pictured and described in 2014 text “CONFEDERATE ODYSSEY, THE GEORGE WRAY JR CIVIL WAR COLLECTION AT THE ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER” on pages 172-173.
