FINE CONFEDERATE J.P. MURRAY, COLUMBUS GEORGIA CARBINE

40” overall, 24” round barrel, fixed rear sight, grooved front band acts as front sight. This carbine is altered from rifle identical to S# 7 & S# 12 as illustrated in Murphy & Madaus CONFEDERATE RIFLES & MUSKETS, page 306-308. Barrel is marked “ALA 1864” & “PRO / FCH” on left breech. (Maj. Frederick. C. Humphreys, chief inspector & commander of Columbus arsenal). Lockplate is stamped “J.P. MURRAY / COLUMBUS GA”. S# 21 found on both lock screws and tang screw. Barrel is stamped with overstruck “28”. This is a rare & superior condition Confederate carbine of which only a handful of examples are known. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of pages cited from Murphy & Madaus text, copy of Julia catalog listing. PROVENANCE: Greene Museum of Southern History, Phenix City, Alabama; James Julia Auctions, lot 3268, Oct. 9, 2014; David Berenson estate collection. STATUS: ANTIQUE.
