PHENOMENAL DWM / MAUSER STOEGER MODEL 1923 AMERICAN EAGLE “SAFE” & “LOADED” ARTILLERY LUGER WITH MATCHING STOCK

Many collectors consider the DWM / Mauser Model 1923 American Eagle Stoeger Luger with the “SAFE” and “LOADED” features to be amongst the rarest and finest finished of all Artillery Lugers. This spectacular highly polished rust blued Luger with strawed small parts does not disappoint. Standard 7 7/8″ bbl. with drift adj. front sight and late form tangent rear sight with 1-8 marked graduations. American Eagle over chamber. Intertwined “DWM” on forward toggle link. The left side of the bbl. extension is marked with C/C/U, followed by the S# “822”, the # with the suffix repeated on the forward frame and under the bbl. The frame additionally marked with “GERMANY”. Standard C/C/U proofing repeated under the bbl. and on the left side of the breechblock. The matching 2-digits of the S# in the usual commercial locations are found under the takedown lever, sideplate, left side of the trigger, and the rear toggle link. The firing pin, sear block, safety lever, and hold-open are unnumbered. As true for all examples of this variation, the safety area is marked “SAFE” and the left side of the extractor is marked “LOADED”. Of particular interest are the Stoeger markings on the right side of the bbl. extension, where “GERMANY” in small letters over the ejector, followed by the 2-line A.F. STOEGER INC/ NEW YORK.”. The right rail is marked with a slightly skewed “GENUINE”, followed by “LUGER – REGISTERED U.S.A. PATENT OFFICE.”. Disassembly shows the major components to have been immaculately rust blued to where there is no blue on the inner surface of either bbl. extension ear, nor is there any blue inside the frame, the upper surface in contact with the bbl. extension having been polished. Unnumbered checkered walnut grips are each internally marked with an “S”. MAGS: x1 unmarked 8-rd. tinned body mag. with a smooth walnut plug marked “GERMANY”. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: shoulder stock with attached holster. Full S# on upper arm of the shoulder stock lug. Smooth walnut body, inner surface, hidden by holster, marked “GERMANY”. Leather boot without internal dye. The holster has an unmarked takedown tool and an original cleaning rod with polished shaft and blunt tip. All the retaining studs for the boot, loading tool closure flap, cleaning rod, and holster lid, are brass. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of John Eckert. STATUS: CURIO.
