STRIKING & UNIQUE DOCUMENTED “IN-THE-WHITE” SHIPPED WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 DELUXE LEVER ACTION SHORT RIFLE WITH PERIOD MASTER CLASS ENGRAVING

Bbl. 24″ octagon to round with original Lyman No. 4 Hunting bead front sight and combination sporting/ladder rear sight. As noted in accompanying factory letter; this rifle was shipped August 28, 1902 with a “polished receiver without finish”. Letter further states rifle was received for “return & repair” on November 25, 1902. Both sides of lower tang stamped “REFINISHED”. This would suggest that this rifle was sent in the white for special engraving outside of the Winchester factory and subsequently returned to the factory for final finishing. Left side of receiver features a vignette of hunter taking aim at running stag amongst a wooded background. Right side of receiver ornamented with two game scene vignettes; one of stalking mountain lion and the other of a buck at watering hole. Scenes are surrounded by nicely shaded vine-type scroll over punch-dot background with straight line and fancy beaded borders. Bottom of action engraved with vine-type scroll over punch-dot background having beaded border. Notes of scroll in fancy borders found on forend cap. All screw heads are floral engraved. Additional special order features include 24″ bbl, 1/2 oct configuration, checkered pistol grip walnut stock and forearm, Lyman front sight, 1/2 mag, and Silver’s recoil pad. “H” checkered stock and forearm of XX fancy walnut. Left side of lower tang stamped “26 XX”. Upper tang channel of stock stamped with matching “26”. LOP: 13 9/16″ over original Silver’s pad. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: letter from Cody Firearms Museum detailing the following information, “Rifle. 45/70 caliber. Barrel Length: 24 inches. Barrel Shape: 1/2 Octagon. Plain trigger. Fancy checkered stock w/ pistol grip & forearm. Sights: Klyman Hunting front sight. 1/2 magazine. Silver’s Recoil Pad. “Polished Receiver”. “Without Finish”. Received in warehouse on August 28, 1902.
