1 of only 1,863 FAL semi-automatic rifles mfg. in Belgium by Fabrique Nationale and imported by Browning Arms Company between 1959-1963. While initially approved for importation, the ATF subsequently reversed their decision due to the ease of conversion to a machine gun, with examples, such as this one being exempted. This example is marked with a triad of Belgian commercial proofs (repeated on the bolt carrier, bolt, and bbl.) and “F.A.L.cal. 7,62” on the left side of the receiver, with “FABRIQUE NATIONALE D’ARMES DE GUERRE_HERSTAL BELGIQUE” marked on the right. Left side of the lower receiver exhibits “A”, “R”, “S” selector markings. Gas plug is marked “Gr”. Metal components exhibit a matte black enamel type finish overall, save for on the bolt and carrier, which have been mostly polished in-the-white. Flash hider exhibits a phosphate finish. 2-piece ventilated brown synthetic handguards (each marked “F674” on the interior), with black synthetic pistol grip and grooved carry handle, as well as a plain wood buttstock with grooved stamped steel buttplate. Buttstock sling swivel base is a replacement with improper screws. Handguard screw is a longer replacement. Standard post front sight and sliding aperture rear sight graduated 2-6. 5-slot flash hider. Right side of receiver is fitted with an unusual 2-screw fastened blued contoured steel plate, which appears to have been installed to negate scratching of the receiver from ejected casings. All serialized parts are matching, with the full S# “G1748” marked on the underside of the receiver, and with the bolt carrier, bolt, bbl., and pistol grip matching via “1748”.
