IMPERIAL JAPANESE, KOKURA ARSENAL TYPE 99 LIGHT MACHINE GUN WITH SCARCE 4-CELL MAGAZINE POUCH & CANVAS CARRIER

Type 99 light machine gun mfg. at the Kokura arsenal in 1942. Right side of the receiver is marked with the Kokura arsenal insignia, followed by Kanji characters denoting the model designation, above the encircled kana (series) mark, the S#, as well as the Showa date code “17.11” (1942, November). Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the bolt and carrier, which are in-the-white. Trigger exhibits a straw finish. 1-piece grooved wood pistol grip and plain wood buttstock with folding monopod. Butt plate and buttstock sling swivel exhibit a black enamel type finish. Standard offset dovetailed blade front sight with windage and elevation adj. peep rear sight. Almost all serialized parts are matching, to include the receiver, charging handle, trigger housing, trigger, safety lever, gas cyl. / Op-rod tube, receiver end cap, bolt carrier, bolt, bolt stop, bolt stop spring, bolt stop cover, and ejector. Bbl. is mismatched and is marked with an “18.12” (1943, December) Showa date code. NFA registry lists “WWII/ Japanese” in the mfg. block. MAGS: x1 30-rd. mag. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: scarce leather and canvas 4-cell mag. pouch containing a spare flash hider. Interior of closure flap is marked with a series of Kanji characters, followed by what appears to be a boxed “16” above a boxed “3”, and a boxed Kanji character. Pouch lid with x2 nickel plated brass “PULL HERE” marked snaps and studs. Additionally, this example is accompanied by a canvas carrier (marked with Kanji characters and a handwritten “T. Cowell/ GUAM ’44” on the interior) and an unidentified tubular canvas pouch marked with x5 Kanji characters in white paint on the exterior. PROVENANCE: From the Harry A. Baldwin Estate Collection.
