CONFEDERATE STATES ARMORY STAFF & FIELD OFFICER’S SWORD
| 02-27303/JS |
This Confederate officer’s sword is a distinctive example of unique architecture featuring a pierced CSA forming the hilt. It was made by Louis Froelich at his “Confederate States Armory” sword factory in Kenansville, North Carolina. The sword measures 39” overall and has a bright 31.5” blade with an unstopped fuller. The original scabbard, characteristic of Froelich’s work, is made of lap-seamed sheet iron with small brass ring mounts, a pinned brass throat, and a distinctive sculpted iron drag with flaring round lobes. The scabbard body retains its lacquered finish. Overall, this is a beautiful “as found” Froelich staff sword with an attractive, untouched patina. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: detailed authentication and appraisal report 2014; Hendershott catalog June 1999. PROVENANCE: Gary Hendershott catalog June 1999, item # 51; David Berenson estate collection 1999. NON-GUN
