An iconic German WWII machine gun, the MG42 was truly advanced for its time, boasting an impressive 1,200 rpm fire rate, which was significantly faster than any of its contemporary rival’s cyclic rates, as well as a stamped steel construction which greatly simplified its production cost and efficiency. This example, mfg. by Gustloff-Werke in 1944 is marked “M.U.” (1944 date code) above the S#, Gustloff’s “dtb” mfg. code, as well as a “rea” sub-contractor code followed by an Eagle/1 proof. Various small parts and components are marked with Carl Eickhorn’s “cof” mfg. code. Bolt is marked with Gustloff’s “dfb” mfg. code and an Eagle/WaA4 proof. Bbl. with Steyr’s shielded “bnz/ 1” mfg. code and Eagle/WaA623 proofing. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the bbl. which exhibits a phosphate finish.
