ALWAYS DESIRABLE NEAL E. SMITH JR. CONVERSION NORINCO TYPE 56S-1 MACHINE GUN

Originally mfg. as a Type 56S-1 semi-automatic rifle at Factory 66 (Norinco) in China and imported by IA Co, this example was subsequently converted into a machine gun and registered by Neal E. Smith Jr. Left side of the receiver is marked “NEAL E. SMITH, JR./ MENTOR, OHIO. Trunnion is marked with Factory 66’s “66” within a triangle insignia, followed by “56S-1”, and the S#. Left side of bbl. is marked with a “IA CO SAC CA” import marked, with “NORINCO 7.62mm CHINA” marked on the right. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the bolt and bolt carrier, which are polished in-the-white. 2-piece plain wood handguard and pistol grip, with under-folding steel buttstock. AK-47 pattern threaded muzzle protector, with standard AK pattern post front sight (rear painted white) and tangent V-notch rear sight (appears to have been slightly widened) graduated D-8. All serialized parts are matching and include the receiver (trunnion), receiver cover, recoil spring guide rod, bolt carrier, and bolt. Gas cyl. tube is matching via “3193”, which is properly electro-penciled on the underside. NFA registry lists “Norinco – China/ Neal E. Smith Jr./ Mentor, Ohio USA” in the mfg. block and “AK47” in the model block. MAGS: x1 Soviet bakelite 30-rd. mag. with Tula star insignia embossed on right and “24B” embossed on left. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: unmarked canvas soft case, with internal pocket for mag. PROVENANCE: From the Edwin M. Louer Estate Collection.
