The Oerlikon 20mm Auto Cannon is a massive blowback operated machine gun chambered in 20x110mm with an average muzzle velocity around 2700 feet per second and a maximum firing rate of approximately 450 rounds per minute. The Oerlikon was utilized in several different configurations by multiple nations during WWII including the United States, Britain, Germany and even Japan. It eventually became regarded as the most effective anti-aircraft cannon of the period. It is typically mounted to a heavy deck mount though there were several lesser-known mounts that existed to adapt it to the particular mission necessary. Old war footage research will uncover numerous examples of twin gun mounts, with each gun firing from a dedicated left-side or right-side specific drum. As far as scenes in movies, depictions of the Oerlikon can be seen in the 1997 film “The Postman” as one is utilized to attack the fictional town of Benning, Oregon. Due to their historical significance and availability of military archival footage, they are most often featured in WWII locations in the Pacific Theatre, such as in the 2001 hit “Pearl Harbor”. This example is marked as follows: U.S.ARMAMENT CORP / EPHRATA PA. / MKIV / SER. NO. 112891 / N.O.P. CENTER LINE” above a letter “W” in a circle, just forward of the magazine-well.
