LARGE FRAMED CONFEDERATE 1ST NATIONAL FLAG
| 02-27781/JS |
This is a beautifully framed flag which framing would cost a fortune today, frame measures 128″ x 82″; the flag measures 113″ x 72″. The heavy cotton canvas hoist is 2″ wide with hand whipped eyelets. The flag is entirely handsewn by excellent seamstress using delicate stitches for the “sewn-through” 8.5″ stars on 49″ x 50″ blue wool bunting canton. Red and white bars are made with pieced wool bunting with the largest pieces 18″ wide. There are two apparent wartime repairs, one in the top of canton using a tighter wove blue bunting piece and bottom bar at hoist has an additional sewn in piece of red fabric. These repairs are well done for continued use of this flag, which apparently saw use. Unfortunately there is no specific history as to where this flag was used, but Greg Biggs opines that this was possibly Mobile contracted Depot for use as a post, storm or garrison flag. Biggs lifts 8 other flags with similar sizes that have survived; only two with any attribution; one from the Charleston Customs House and one from Camp Moore Louisiana. Texas was the 7th state to secede, and this flag is framed with a nice brass plaque reading “THE TEXAS PATTERN”. Regardless of history, this is a wonderful example of an early war 1st National Confederate flag made prior to April 1861 when Virginia was added making 8 stars. 7-star flags continued use well into 1863. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 6-page report by Greg Biggs with detailed history of this pattern and this particular flag. PROVENANCE: Norm Flayderman 1979 catalog; Gary Perkins collection; John Kinchloe collection 2005. NON-GUN
