Shortly after the completion of 1,005 Luger holsters by Rock Island Arsenal for the U.S. Test Trials Lugers, a second design was submitted by that of Colonel H.H. Whitney. The holster, while similar holsters produced at RIA, was notably smaller, and was designed to carry the butt of the pistol to the rear (butt to rear), as compared to the from, which was a design philosophy that had already been previously rejected. Ultimately the design was rejected, with this holster possibly being the only example produced. The holster is comprised of brown russet leather, featuring a brass closure flap stud and 6 brass rivets on the rear, fastening the belt loop. There appears to have been a flat panel installed at the end of the toe (indicated by stitch marks), which is absent, Closure flap is embossed with “US” within an oval, with a line of illegible handwritten text written on the interior in black ink. This example (matched via wear and handling marks) is pictured and briefly described on page 241 of “U.S. Military Holsters and Pistol Cartridge Boxes” by Edward Scott Meadows.
