GROVES HERRICK

Groves Herrick earned his undergraduate degree in aeronautical engineering from MIT, and then continued his education in England, where he completed a Ph.D. at the University of Southampton. After several years working for Sikorsky Aircraft as an engineer, he brought this expertise back to Maine, where he became a beloved professor at the Maine Maritime Academy for several decades. He will be remembered by countless students for his passionate commitment to education, engineering, and the history of technology.

Herrick’s fascination with guns began as a young boy, passed down to him by his father. This initial interest blossomed into a serious lifelong hobby, centering on the collecting of antique rifles. Based on all the fond stories he would tell of sporting with his father, his fascination with firearms certainly had its root in that strong relationship. Yet, later in life, after his father’s passing, he made many other strong, positive relationships with other gun enthusiasts in the neighborhood and through the Blue Hill Gun Club.

For Herrick, guns were a lifelong passion, but also a technical appreciation. As an engineer, he admired the mechanical operation of firearms, and he was particularly interested in the long history of innovation and experimentation that marks their technological history. As a collector, he was not content with simply owning these historical pieces; his passion extended to the meticulous and specialized craft of making ammunition for his many antique rifles. This hands-on, detail-oriented work brought together his love for both engineering and firearms history, allowing him to fully appreciate the complex mechanics of his collection.
