SUPERB PAINTING OF THE SHIP DORCHESTER OF THE MERCHANTS & MINERS LINE OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND BY J. BROWN.

02-16625

An exceptionally fine painting of the ship Dorchester with a gold leaf frame measuring 39 1/4″ x 29 1/4″ and the sight size of the painting itself measuring 33″ x 23″. The painting depicts the Dorchester steaming through open ocean with sails in & smoke rising from the single stack. The American flag waves off the stern. A large, red, white & blue pennant flies from the aft mast that reads, “DORCHESTER”. The fore mast has a blue flag showing a central white triangle with the letters, “M & M CO”. This flag represents the company flag of Merchants & Miners Shipping out of Baltimore, Maryland.

The painting is quite well done & appears to be a very fine representation of the ship with accurate features throughout attesting to the skill & maritime knowledge of the artist. The use of impasto in the clouds & the ocean are minimal but effective. The painting is signed in the lower right hand corner & appears to read, “J BROWN 89”. We could not locate information on this artist but perhaps a more in depth search could identify him. The Dorchester was built in Wilmington, Delaware for Merchants & Miners out of Baltimore. The 1,875 net ton ship was built of iron in 1888 & was 40/40 abeam.
