MASSIVE ROSEWOOD HANDLE COFFIN HILT BOWIE.

02-16236

Well ground & polished blade is 16″ long w/ 6 1/2″ long clip point. Well defined medium ridge. 4 1/2″ Heavy diamond shaped iron guard. 2 Rosewood scales are pinned to a full tang. Tooled leather sheath is hand stitched w/ an integral sewn throat & belt loop. The blade & crossguard show forging flaws so reminiscent of Confederate cutlery, but the use of rosewood & coffin shape most likely predate this knife to the antebellum era & quite possibly southern.

This knife was featured in the winter 1997 Antique Bowie Knife Association Bulletin article by Wayne McNeese.
