VERY FINE REGULATION CIVIL WAR SNARE DRUM, CONFEDERATE USED.

02-17249

This is classic eagle drum 16.5” diameter, 16” high with painted American eagle with ribbon which originally read “REGT US INFANTRY”, it has been over painted to read “REGT CS INFANTRY”.

This drum was in the longtime collection of Civil War drums of Norm Flayderman. It was later cataloged by Gary Hendershott, and then by Michael Siemens who sold it to Cullen. It is in remarkable condition for any Civil War painted drum regardless of its changed alliance. Drum has Roger’s contract label from Flushing NY, which can be seen through vent hole. Michael Simens noted when he sold it to Cullen: “This rare and unusual drum is untouched and fairly well-known. It was formerly the property of Norm Flayderman and still retains his tags.

The drum is 100% original and complete with the exception of leather tighteners, and its makers label (Rogers) is still in the interior, one of the best condition drums I have ever seen. It retains an old coating of dirt and grime and although completely untouched, this drum retains vibrant colors to its beautiful panel. You’ll note in the photo that the “U” in “US” has been changed to a “C”. I guarantee this “C” to be a period alteration, as did Norm, as it shows the same age, dirt, and aged patina as does the balance of the drums surface.

This drum was obviously a capture piece, taken home as a souvenir. I doubt another even exists. This drum is extremely rare and is also a beautiful display piece.

PROVENANCE: Cullen Smith estate collection.
