ATTRIBUTED TO PAUL STARRETT SAMPLE (American 1896-1974) SKIING SCENE

05-157

Watercolor on paper depicts a rural New England village (probably in Vermont). In the background skiers are skiing down the mountain and in the foreground is a horse drawn wagon with skiers and their skis being transported down to the village. The general store and other village buildings are at the center of this charming winter scene. The watercolor is matted and tastefully framed in a gray deep molded frame. Sample was born in Kentucky in 1896 and died in Norwich, Vermont in 1974. He painted a number of subject matters, but he is particularly known for his New England subject matter, especially those involving winter skiing in Vermont. In 1930 he moved permanently to New England and became an artist in residence at Dartmouth College and they lived in Norwich, Vermont. This painting is unsigned, but in my mind is unquestionably by Paul Sample as he is known to have painted and signed numerous similar paintings with skiing scenes in northern Vermont, his specific style of painting is very much reflected here in this piece.
