A FINE R.J. HORNER CARVED MAHOGANY SLANT LID DESK WITH GRYPHON CARVINGS

Late 19th century, New York. The desk is heavily carved with scrolling leaf tips and vinery on every surface. The hinged lid opens to an interior fitted with cubbyholes and small pen and stationary drawers above three aligned short drawers with carved leafy drawer pulls, over a central knee hole within carved valances flanked by a small drawer. The case is supported by seated winged Griffins beautifully carved in deep relief centering an open shelf with gadrooned edge. Robert J. Horner opened in New York City in 1886. Horner’s furniture is marked by heavily carved surfaces covered with griffins, gargoyles, cherubs, and gadrooning.
