Bbl. 10.5″. There are very few firearms as recognizable as the Thompson sub-machine gun. With its characteristic vertical foregrip, heavily finned bbl. & popular drum magazine, the “Tommy gun” or “Chicago Typewriter” may only have a reputation in real life exceeded by Hollywood portrayals. Here we have the 1927-A1 version which is the semi auto carbine variant that was registered as and converted to a select-fire SMG prior to the cutoff in 1986. Matte finish receiver & grip frame & barrel. The 10.5″ bbl. boasts 28 cooling fins above the wooden vertical grip & a Thompson bullet logo marked Cutts compensator / front sight combination just like the original. A slotted & knurled charging handle sits atop the receiver & provides a clear path from the folding rear sight to the front pin. Matching wooden rear pistol grip w/ the left side safety & selector. Full length, quick detatch wood shoulder stock. Left side receiver markings include “MODEL OF 1927 A1″/ “NO. 2019″/ “THOMPSON SUBMACHINEGUN”/ “CALIBER. 45 AUTOMATIC CARTRIDGE”. Right side receiver markings “AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION”/ “WEST HURLEY, NEW YORK, U.S.A.” w/ traditional US Patent block. Magwell accepts Thompson drums & modified SMG stick mags. MAGS: (3 total). 1-50 rd. “L” drum marked on front data plate “MAGAZINE TYPE ‘L'”/ “THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN”/ “50 CARTRIGES CAL. 45″/ “FOR 1928 MODEL WIND TO”/ “9 OR 11 CLICKS”. Front body marked w/ trademarked Thompson bullet logo & “WIND TO 9 OR 11 CLICKS”. On rear data plate “AUTO-ORDNANCE CORP.”/ “BRIDGEPORT CONNECTICUT”/ “REGISTERED IN THE”/ “US PATENT OFFICE”. It also includes the letter “U” signifying United Specialties Company of Chicago. 2 stick mags, 1 used 20 rd. & 1 new in wax wrapper 30 rd. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Black folding hard case w/ dark purple interior. Case has 5 latches on front & sides, w/ 4 hinges on back. Brass cleaning rod. CONDITION: This gun appears to have been converted to an SMG by R.W. Davis of Salem, VA. as indicated on an older Form 4 transfer & coinciding w/ stamping inside the receiver; “RWD SALEM VA” below the cocking handle. Original factory lettering “SEMI-AUTOMATIC CARBINE” on left side of receiver has been milled off and restamped “SUBMACHINE GUN” before what appears to be a cold blue finish touchup. Finish ranges from full coverage to thin w/ a light patina as typical of a “range gun” as opposed to a safe queen. Shiny bore w/ strong rifling. Wood furniture is all in descent shape w/ typical light impressions. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand.
