8.5″ x 6.5″ Drake, Ponca City, Oklahoma Territory mounted photograph of 4 chiefs with pipe tomahawks, and full costume along with 2 interpreters. White Eagle (~1825-1914) was born on the ancestral Ponca homeland somewhere near the confluence of the Niobrara River and Missouri River which forms the contemporary South Dakota-Nebraska state line. At the time of his birth, the Ponca hereditary chief sovereign had full sovereign power over his people and counseled by thirteen subordinate chiefs who represented all the interests of the Ponca citizenry.
