MERWIN & HULBERT LARGE FRAME OPEN TOP FACTORY ENGRAVED & INSCRIBED SA REVOLVER
01-27651 | Cal. 44-40, marked “Caliber Winchester 1873″ on left side of frame. | Bbl. 7” with semi-circular sight.
Scoop fluted 6 rd. cyl. Full coverage vine type foliate scroll engraving done in the style of L.D. Nimschke. Center of left sideplate depicts a hounds head. Backstrap is inscribed “CHAS ZEIGER”. Full nickel finish. 2-piece pearl grips with lanyard ring at butt. Quantity of all large frame models are estimated at only several thousand, a very small percentage of which are the open-top scoop fluted variation. UNATTACHED ACCESORIES: binder containing many pages of information about the Zeiger Brothers ranch near Navajo Station, Arizona Territory. The Zeiger ranch was in the vicinity of the Pleasant Valley range war of 1887. The Zeiger were involved with and possibly partners with Commodore Perry Owens. Owens was the survivor of one of the most infamous gunfights in Arizona history which took place on September 4th, 1887 at Holbrook. Owens as sheriff of Apache County shot it out with 4 men, killing 3 of them and leaving the 4th badly wounded. Binder also includes advertisements from auction houses and firearms dealers regarding this revolver. Also provided is a Mexican style triple loop leather holster with embossed designs along edges. Holster is in fair condition showing some age related cracking and wear. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Norm Greenberg Collection. STATUS: ANTIQUE.
