FANCY C. KEMPER BERKS COUNTY SCHOOL CONTEMPORARY FLINTLOCK RIFLE

Bbl. 42″ octagon measuring 3/4″ across the flats. Top flat is hand stamped “C. KEMPER” followed by S# “1670”. Cornell Kemper (1952-2003) was a builder of late flintlock period long rifles. Breech end of bbl. and tang are lightly ornamented with scroll engraving. Silver blade front sight on a dovetailed winged base with fixed V notch rear sight. Engraved trade style lock. Double set triggers. Full length Roman nose cheekpiece pin fastened stock of fine curly maple. Right side has a segmented rectangular lid silver patchbox with pineapple style finial having extensive floral and geometric pattern engraving. Additional engraved silver inlay includes cheekpiece plate, 2 curved cheekpiece ornaments, left side heel plate, 8-point stars on either side of the wrist, and an oval plate at top of wrist. Roman nose has a pointed non-engraved silver inlay extending from the buttplate peak. Silver inlays on both sides of forearm consist of acorns forward of the action with flying pigeons between the faceted brass thimble and 2 faceted pipes. Forearm also has ornate engraved brass escutcheons on both sides of all 3 stock pins. Artificially striped brass tipped hardwood ramrod. Brass furniture consists of crescent buttplate, engraved finger curl trigger guard, engraved pierced sideplate, engraved pierced toe plate, and engraved forearm plate. Engraved gold plated inlays include an open wing eagle on the cheekpiece, with a fish below the cheekpiece, heart behind cheekpiece, 2 half moons on both sides of the wrist, and sideplate. Additional non-engraved gold plated ornaments are found on both sides of the tang. Both sides of top tang have small pointed brass ornamentation. Toeline along with butt and comb areas of stock have highlights of incise carving. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a handwritten letter dated November 2, 1988 from C.J. Kemper, custom builder of Kentucky rifles from Ferdinand, IN. stating that he built this rifle in the fall of 1968. Also included is other letters, photos, and inventory information. STATUS: ANTIQUE.
