FINE “AS FOUND” HOLLAND & HOLLAND GRADE 2 SIDELOCK DANGEROUS GAME DOUBLE RIFLE WITH CASE
25-3423 | Cal. 500/450 Nitro. 3-1/4″. | S# 17926 (1905).
Built just before the military caliber (.450) rifles were banned in the colonies resulting in production of .465, .470s, etc. This unrestored rifle is in a very highly regarded big game cartridge. The 26″ chopper lump barrels are fitted with a quarter rib holding one standing two folding leaf express rear sights. A small white pyramid is glued beneath the “V” of the standing sight. Typical H&H style front ramp holds white front bead. Tops of barrels are engraved “Holland & Holland” “98 New Bond Street London.” “Winners of all the Field Rifle Trials London”. Barrel flats are stamp with London nitro proofs for 70 grains cordite and 480 grain bullet. S# is on the bottom of both barrels and splinter is extra heavy. Case hardened action with hand detachable back spring locks features non-automatic safety, (“SAFE” inlaid in gold), long top strap that extends over comb, hidden crossbolt third fastener, gold band tumbler end cocking indicators, bushed strikers and double triggers. Engraving on action consists of small scroll borders with bottom engraved “Charge” “70 Grains of Cordite” “500/450” “Case 3-1/4 inches”. Each lockplate is engraved “Holland & Holland”. Takedown lever is engraved “Holland’s Patent”. Trigger guard has S# on tang which extends to steel trap grip cap holding spare front sight with flip-up night bead wrapped in paper that is printed “For 100 yds +” “Hold at 6 o’clock” “For 50 yds”. Pistol grip buttstock made of well marbled and well figured European walnut measures 14-3/4″ over red “Old English” pad on two 1/4″ spacers. Stock features classic H&H style checkering and shadow line right hand cheekpiece, a vacant gold oval and sling eye are on toeline; matching eye on barrel. Matching splinter forend has pivoting lever release. MEASUREMENTS: WEIGHT: 10 lb. 2 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in period reddish canvas leather trimmed case; lined in dark green cloth. A silver embossed black leather label is in lid. A copy of the book “Buffalo Shot Placement and Trophy Evaluation” by Kevin Robertson.
